The coast to thesouth of Cape Jones is very pleasant. There aremany islands on which one can go ashore to campor for meals. To the north of the Cape the coastis open and when the wind was strong we had to laythe canoe up close to the shore for fear of being blownout to sea in our frail craft. This was in some placesrather dangerous on account of the shoals. Whenwe left the point of Cape Jones we had to travel inthis way. We went about eighteen miles in twohours, and then were very thankful to put ashoreon a barren point of the Cape where some Eskimos. ESKIMO CHILDREN OUTSIDE TENT. FORT GEORGE 179 and Indians were staying. These were very pleasedto see us, and came down to the beach to help carryour things to a suitable camping place. We hadonly a tiny tent made as there were no long wood and water we used had to be brought in akayak, and, of course, was not plentiful. It wasrather awkward with a young baby. The eveningwe arrived was pleasant, and our boy enjoyed agame with the Eskimo children. The following day, Sunday, my husband wasbusy reading and speaking to the people. We werekept in the tent on account of the rain which fellalmost continuously the whole day. Monday alsowas very wet and we could not think of going on,so we had to make the best of our surroundings.
