The Leeds and Liverpool canal looking towards the site of a breach that occurred in the canal near Rishton with this being the resulting drained canal

Cw 7769 Drained canal looking towards breach from bridge 109 The drained Leeds and Liverpool canal looking towards the site of the breach from bridge 109, New Barn Bridge, near Rishton. Overnight from the 10th to the 11th of October 2021 a breach occurred in the bed and then the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool canal in East Lancashire. The breach is between bridges 109 New Barn Bridge near Rishton and bridge 110 Aspen Bridge near Church. There is a culvert runs under the canal here taking water away to Hyndburn Brook and it appears that the initial leak was through the bed of the canal into this culvert. As it worsened it became bigger and took some of the canal wash wall and the towpath with it. On Monday morning fibre dams were installed at bridges 109 and 110 to prevent even more water flowing out of the canal on the long pound between Barrowford and Blackburn locks, a distance of about 22 miles.
