The façade of The Istana, the official residence of the President of Singapore.

The Istana was originally built as the Governor’s Residence when Singapore was a British colony. It was completed in 1869. It housed not only the Governor but also senior administrators. It was built in the Neo-Pallaian style, typical of many colonial buildings constructed by the British engineers in India. The central tower is on three floors and is 28 metres in height. The building passed to the new Singaporean government in 1959 on self-governance. Since 1960 the grounds have been open to the public on public holidays throughout the year.
