Tropical Storm Iniki seen from space. This storm originated as Hurricane Iniki, which caused serious damage on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in September 1992. At that time, the winds in the hurricane exceeded 240 km/h, and generated waves of over 5 metres in height. As the hurricane passed over Hawaii and into the cooler waters of the North Pacific, it began to weaken and was down-graded to Tropical Storm. This weakening is evidenced by the lack of thunderstorm activity near the centre of the cloud swirl. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Endeavour during Mission STS-47 of 12-20 September 1992.
