Surgically, thisis the pedicle of thespleen. (Fig. 45,)Between the upperend of the diaphragmpasses another doubleperitoneal layer, known as the suspen-sory ligament of thespleen. The external sur-face of the spleen, incontact with the dia-phragm, IS describedas lying in contactwith the ninth, tenth, and eleventh internal surface,in its anterior por-tions, is in relation with the cardiac end of the stomach—behind, with the left crus of the diaphragm and the left supra-renal cap-sule; and below, with the tail of the pancreas. Its relations withthe stomach are liable to be disturbed by the movements of thatorgan. As to the margins of the spleen : at the top, where thesuspensory ligament is given off, it is blunt and rounded; thelower extremity is pointed, and normally lies over the junction. Drawing to show the vessels in the Hilum ofthe Spleen. I, 2. Vessels penetrating the spleen at the superior, and4, the inferior extremities of the hilum. 3, 5, 7. Gastricbranches — vasa brevia. 6. The average dimensions of the spleen,in the adult, are : five inches in length, three or four in breadth, and from an inch to an inch and a half in thickness. Its weightis about seven ounces. The structures in the gastro-splenic omentum, venous andarterial, which go to form the pedicle in splenectomy are ofimportance. The splenic artery, the largest branch of thecoeliac axis, pursues a tortuous course behind the upper borderof the pancreas from the aorta to the spleen. In its course itgives off small bran
