Southern smooth snake, artwork. The southern smooth snake (Coronella girondica) is found throughout southern Europe and Northern Africa, and is harmless to humans. They generally eat small lizards, with skinks, geckos, smaller snakes and occasionally mammals also taken. Most of their prey is crushed by constriction and swallowed head first.
