Religious services were held within the Hniits of the townas early as 1767, but it was not until the following year thata ohurch was organized. On Jul\ 14, 1768, thirty-two persons,sixteen men and sixteen women, signed the covenant and thusconstituted the First Congregational Church of Conway. Pre-\ious to the organization of the church, at an adjourned townmeeting held at the house of Capt. Jonathan Whitney, a com-mittee was appointed to fix the center of the town, so that themeeting house would be conxenient to the residents of thetownshij). The committee reported that the place selected wasye nole about fifteen or twenty rods north of the southeastcorner of the (\MUer Street, and upon that spot the house waserected.
