Furthermore, the openingof Portland Channel into Dixons Entrance is shownby two official maps of the British number 2431 of the British Admiralty, pub-lished on the 13th of July, 1865, corrected to Feb-ruary, 1901, on which Observatory Inlet is markedaccording to Staff Commr. Penders Survey, 1868,. British Admiralty Chart, No. 2458, published December 15TH, 1S96, and correctedTO March, 1900: prepared under the direction of Rear Admiral Wharton. MAP No. 23. ENGUSH AND CANADIAN MAPS. II7 gives the north west coast of America from PortSimpson to Cross Sound. Chart number 2458 ofthe British Admiralty, pubHshed on the 15th of De-cember, 1896, corrected to March, 1900, shows thecoast Hne about Port Simpson and the inner chan-nels opposite Prince of Wales Island. (See MapNo. 23.) On both these charts the passage ofwater south of Pearse and Wales Islands openinginto Dixons Entrance is marked Portland Inlet,and the channel to the north of Pearse and WalesIslands is marked Pearse Canal. But in addition, it is a rule of International Lawthat where a water boundary is a frontier betweentwo States, unless it is expressly otherwise pro-vided the line of demarcation between these twopowers shall pass through the deepest part of thewater area, that is through the thalweg.
