The ordinary case exhibits about thefollowing type of conduct: (l) While the craving is at itsheight the victim manifests much uneasiness and often muchexcitation. (2) During the indulgence the cheek is alter-nately flushed and blanched, the respiration considerably in- CIGARETTE SMOKING 319 creased, and the hands tremble. (3) About twenty minutesafter smoking the muscles become relaxed, the respiration slowand shallow, the skin on the face dry and sallow, and there isan apparent feeling of unconcern about RECOED OF A SMOKERS HEART ACTION(See Opposite Page) SMOKING A MOST SERIOUS OBSTACLE TO STUDENTSHIP The injurious effects of smoking upon the boys mentalactivities are very marked. Of the many hundreds of tab-ulated cases in my possession, several of the very youthfulones have been reduced almost to the condition of of 2,336 who were attending public school, only six werereported bright students. A very few, perhaps ten, wereaverage/ and all the remainder were poor or worthless 320 CIGARETTE SMOKING students. The average grades of fifty smokers and fifty non-smokers were computed from the records of one terms workdone in the Kansas Agricultural College, and the results fav-ored the latter group with a difference of per cent. Thetwo groups represented the same class rank; that is, the samenumber of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. The ordinary cigarette-smoking student often has a verypeculia
