Foundling Hospital, Coram Fields. Smallpox Hospital, St. Pancras. HARRISON, 1775
Artist/engraver/cartographer: Engraved for Harrison's History of London. Provenance: "A New and Universal History, Description and Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster, The Borough of Southwark"; by Walter Harrison, Printed for J. Cooke, London. Type: Antique 18th century copperplate print. The Foundling Hospital, described as "the most imposing single monument erected by eighteenth century benevolence", was founded in Bloomsbury in 1741 by the philanthropist Thomas Coram as a children's home for the "education and maintenance of exposed and deserted young children". It moved to the countryside in 1920, and the original buildings were demolished, although a legacy still remains. Now known as Coram's Fields, the site houses a playground, and the Foundling Museum and art collection.
