VERS-PONT-DU-GARD, France — The majestic Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct and UNESCO World Heritage site, spans the tranquil Gardon River in southern France. This remarkable three-tiered bridge showcases the ingenuity of Roman engineering against the backdrop of the picturesque Mediterranean landscape.

Photograph by David Coleman. The Pont du Gard, one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts, dominates the scene as it stretches across the Gardon River. Built in the 1st century AD, this monumental structure stands as a testament to Roman engineering prowess, rising to a height of meters (160 ft) with three tiers of arches. The limestone bridge, part of the 50 km (31 mi) long Nîmes aqueduct, contrasts beautifully with the blue waters of the Gardon River flowing beneath it. The surrounding landscape likely features the characteristic Mediterranean vegetation and limestone cliffs of the region. The lower level of the bridge, with its six arches, serves as a pedestrian crossing, allowing visitors to experience the aqueduct up close. The river below may show signs of recreational use, as the area is popular for swimming and kayaking during warmer months.
