African harrier hawk (Polyboroides typus). This bird of prey, which is also known as a gymnogene, is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, except in arid regions. It is a solitary bird that lives in woodland and grows up to 65 centimetres in length. It feeds on small mammals, birds, reptiles and insects, taking its prey from cavities and crevices in trees.
