Dermatophyte fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the dermatophyte fungus Trichophyton rubrum. The thread-like structures are hyphae, the vegetative part of the fungus, the pale orange spheres are spores, the reproductive structures of the fungus. Dermatophyte fungi infect keratinised tissues (skin, nails, hair) in humans and other animals, causing diseases such as athlete's foot and ringworm. Magnification: x800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
