Vintage portrait photo of Harriet Tubman (c1820 – 1913). Born into slavery, Tubman (birth name Araminta Ross) escaped and later guided other slaves to freedom via the Underground Railroad before working as a nurse, spy and scout for the Union Army during the American Civil War. In later life she engaged in humanitarian work and promoted the cause of women’s suffrage. Photo circa 1911, likely taken at Tubman’s home in Auburn, New York.
