Nylon stockings. Nylon stockings in use in a still from the DuPont Company's film 'A New World Through Chemistry' (1940). This film showcased some of the latest advances and everyday applications of chemicals produced by the DuPont Company. Nylon could be worn much thinner than other materials, and still last as long. Nylon was a new material discovered by the DuPont Company in 1935 and used from 1939 in products such as stockings. The nylon yarn was manufactured at the DuPont Company's factor in Seaford, Delaware, USA. Nylon stockings were immensely popular, but had to be discontinued due to nylon being reserved solely for wartime applications.
