Near Skeiðflötur, off highway 1, South Iceland
Iceland is a beautiful, unspoilt country. It's been used as a location for many films and tv programmes. This image is taken just of Highway 1 Near Skeiðflötur and shows miles and miles of snow covered compressed volcanic ash from lava flows. Nothing much grows here which accounts for the high prices of food which is mostly imported. Some salads are grown in enormous green houses which are heated geothermally, as are most homes. These strange frozen sheets of ice are created by water freezing, then thawing and floating on water which then refreezes underneath them. Seismic activity is closely monitored as the Icelandic people are expecting another large eruption any day. Icelanders are very artistic and well educated. There are more published authors in Iceland than any other country in the world. They still believe in trolls and old traditions.
