Joan (Johan) Nieuhof (22 July 1618 Uelsen, Holland – 8 October 1672 in Madagascar). A Dutch voyager, explorer and author who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China and India. The most famous of these was a trip of 2, 400 km from Canton to Peking in 1655-1657, which brought some of the first accurate views of China back to a Western Audience. He wrote 'An embassy from the East-India Company' containing the written account of this journey. This is the frontis portait and titel of that book.
