The remarkable and modern White Temple, Wat Rung Khun, Chiang Rai, Thailand

Wat Rung Khun is situated near Chiang Rai in northern Thailand. Unlike most other temples it is modern in construction. It was the brain-child of Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Work was started in 1997 and is on-going. The temple is constructed in pure white with clear mirrored glass. The white is to represent Buddha’s purity and the reflective mirror chips and tiles represent his light shining out over the world and universe. Unlike more traditional temples with murals depicting scenes from the life of the Lord Buddha this one has scenes from modern life painted by Chalermchai Kositpipat. The include subjects such as a plane crashing into the Twin Towers and rockets going into space, held back by demons.
