The Kuna (or Guna) religion consists of a complex system of chants and other gestures of appeasement used by the medicine man. The evils are thought to reside in storms, rocks and animals. People possessed by these spirits must be overcome by magic chants from the medicine man. The small wooden dolls are carved in human forms by elderly Kuna men in different sizes are specialised in treating disease and kept in each house as protection against evil spirits.
