The space between the pointedheads of the sub-arches on the east and west faces ispierced by quatrefoils; those on the west are different indesign from those on the east. The parapet of the tower has features in its design whichindicate that the original one had been added to the earliertower during the fifteenth century. The octagonal termina-tions to the four turrets were of the same character and dateas the Phoiochmm Co., Ltd., phol>. THE DETACHED BELL-TOWER. 78 CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL. The spire rises out of the supporting walls of the towerwithin the parapet. It is a regular octagon in shape. Fouroctagonal pinnacles are placed at its base next to each ofthe turrets of the tower ; and between these, on the otherfour faces of the spire, are tall stone dormers, with carvedcrockets and finials on the copings of the high-pitched this group the spire is divided into three sections bytwo bands of diaper-work cut out of the stone surfaces ascusped quatrefoils; and from the base of the spire to itscapstone there is a projecting rib on each angle betweenthe several faces of the octagon. The Bell Tower, which stands alone to the north of thecathedral, is now the only one of its kind in England; andit is curious that in two cases where these towers were found,as at
