He has served his town repeatedly as modera-tor, was for seventeen years town clerk, and has beenpostmaster, representative, and county commissioner,serving also in 1869, by special appointment, as chair-man of the joint board of commissioners of Belknap andGrafton counties, in the trial of the noted bridge case ofDaniel Smith v. towns of New Hampton and the movement for the division of Sanbornton and. PERSONAL AND FARM SKETCHES. 177 the erection of the town of Tihon was inaugurated in1869, Mr. Taylor was instrumental in causing aremonstrance to be entered against tiie division on thepetition presented, deteating the petition and subse-quenth settling the matter by a compromise, much moreadvantageous in its terms to the old town than the origi-nal proposition. He was town clerk at this time, andupon the division was chosen chairman of the Sanborn-ton board of selectmen and town treasurer, $109,000passing througli iiis hands in three months during thesettlement of affairs between the old and new was senator from the Fifth district in i883-84, andDemocratic candidate for councilor in the Third districtagainst Colonels E. C. Shirle}^ and John C. Linehan,defeating an election in each case and his opponentsbeing chosen by the legislature.
