Blaese, Anderson and Culver, US geneticists. Michael Blaese (born 1939, left), French Anderson (born 1936, center), and Kenneth Culver (right) presenting their gene therapy research during a press conference in September 1990. They proposed that gene therapy be administered to children with SCID (severe combined immune deficiency), a rare genetic disease that results in a deficient immune system, where common childhood illnesses or infections become life threatening. Gene therapy involves replacing the faulty gene causing a genetic disease with a normal one.
