Clinical photograph of a stomach (gastric) ulcer, taken after a partial gastrectomy, the surgical removal of part of the stomach. The ulcer is almost perfectly circular, with a yellow border. Symptoms include vomiting and upper abdominal pain after eating. Causes are related to diet, alcohol consumption, stress and aspirin- like drugs (the NSAID group). Complications such as bleeding, perforation and obstruction due to scarring may occur. The symptoms are alleviated by antacid medicines, and by drugs that reduce the production of gastric acid. Severe cases may require surgery. Gastric & duodenal ulcers are commonly called peptic ulcers.
