Sterilizing the SoiL Steam sterilization in the greenhouse is the best means of making a soil safe for sweet peas. Much has already been said and written on how to steam-ster- ilize soil and on the advantages derived from the operation. Prospective grow- ers will do well to install a heating plant with facilities to generate steam. The establishment of such a plant will more than pay for itself, as it will put on a sound basis the safe and profitable growing of all greenhouse crops. Where steam facilities are lacking, the formaldehyde treatment is the next best means of soil sterilization. Dis solve one pint of pure formaldehyde, sold as forty per cent pure in all drug stores, in twenty gallons of water. With a watering can apply one gallon of the solution to every square foot of bed space. This soil treatment is usually employed a week to ten days before planting. TESTING CANNAS IN TENNESSEE. It has the Firebird shape, but is a little smaller. Its foliage is exceptionally good, and the color is unique, a pure cochineal. Ottawa Improved has delighted us all summer. We had never grown it before. There are few reds that can equal it, and we doubt if any really excel it as all-round bedding cannas. Where Choice Is Difficult. Henry George and Dragon are much alike.
