An elementary manual of radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony for students and operators . tory of this great achievement was related byMr. Marconi in a lecture at the Eoyal Institution of GreatBritain, delivered on March 13, 1908, in which he recounted thevarious stages of the work and the steps by wliich success hadfinally been attained. The practicability of long distance radiotelegraphy havingbeen thus demonstrated by Mr. Marconi, numerous rivals enteredthe field with projects for transatlantic telegraphy, and in thecase of the stations erected on the spark system, the generalarrangements first introduced in the Marconi stations have beenclosely followed, with the exception that the -coupling of theantenna in these other stations is generally a direct couplinginstead of inductive. The receiving station on each side is thereforeplaced at some distance from the sendini^ station. In NorthWales the semling station is on the side of a liill near Carnarvon, and the receiving station is at Towyn, GO miles away on the 276 RADIOTELEGRAPHY Welsh coast. Four wires conuect these stations, by means ofwhich the transmitters at Carnarvon can be worked from is supplied to the sending station by an overhead line at10,000 volts. This comes from the North Wales Power andTraction Company, and is a three-phase alternating currentsupply. The power supply station is at Cwn Dyli, 11 5 milesaway, and obtains its power from water supplied by a lake onSnowden. The 10,000 volt three-phase current is reduced bytransformers to 440 volts and employed to drive three-phasemotors coupled to single-phase alternators or to direct-currentgenerators as required.
