AUTOMATIC VALVE MOTION. For a steam striking of the supplementary valves in the cylinder head by the piston releases the pressure on thatend of the valve bobbin, when it isthrown over, carrying the valve withit. The small cylinders in each endof the main cylinder have each alive steam port and an exhaust, andwithin them pistons work freely asindependent valves, each having astem normally projecting within the main cylinder. These valves areoperated in one direction by the main piston coming in contact withtheir stems, and are moved by the pressure of steam on their backs inan opposite direction. It is applicable to direct-acting pumps, andalso to direct-acting engines for other than pumping 171. TYPES OF SLIDE VALVES. Slide valve of the Chandler& Taylor tandem compound engine. The valve is of the gridiron type, and is double-ported for both steam andexhaust, making it possible to admitlarge amounts of steam into each end ofthe cylinder quickly and with a veryshort valve travel. The valve, beinglight and perfectly balanced by meansof the pressure plate on its top side, istherefore very easily acted upon by thegovernor.
