As well as onthe coasts, it has occurred a good many times inland, by lakes, reservoirs, etc. Description of adult in summer {$ $ $ ^ 2 ^, Northern Norway, Russian Lap-land, and Kolguiev): bill black, \vith a slight green tinge; iris umber; upperparts brownish-grey ; the feathers of the crown, shoulders, and back, have darkcentres, quite black on some of the scapulars, whilst others have no dark centresat all, giving the back a patchy look; gre^-brown margins to the back feathers,. UJN c75 1-< o Hz oz UJ TemminckS Stint. ^3i but a few are indistinctly rufous; shafts of the outer primary only white, of therest nearly as dusky as the rest of the feathers; throat and chin white; sides ofthe head (excepting a dusky white eyebrow), neck and upper breast, grey, streakedand spotted finely with dusky brown: rest of under parts white; tail brownish,outer pair of feathers white, the rest passing by degrees into the brown of thecentral ones; legs and feet greenish-grey. Length 5J to 6 inches, closed wing3i to 4. Adults in winter have lost, by the autumn moult, the black markings on theback, and the upper parts are plain uniform grey, with a brownish tinge andslightly darker centres to the feathers. Young birds are like the adults in winter, with sandy margins to the feathersof the upper parts, and the upper breast is tinged with tawny and but littlespotted.
