Theywere, as Prof. Virchow informs me, in use in Germany in every perioddown to the twelfth century , and are found there in are also frequent in the Swiss Lake-dwellings,^ in the Lake-dwellings in the Lake of Constance,^ in the caverns of Inzighofen,^ inthe pre-historic settlements in Hungary,*^ on ancient sites in the AleutianIslands, in Kentucky, in San Miguel Island, California, &c. ;^ in Denmarkon sites of the Stone age,^ and elsewhere.
