Bacteria killed by antimicrobial polymer. This new material was designed to kill drug-resistant microbes. It was developed by IBM researchers and Singapore's Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN). The IBM researchers were led by James Hedrick and based in Almaden, California, USA. The image shows cells of the Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria after treatment with the polymer. The cytoplasmic substances within the bacterial cell membrane have precipitated, killing the bacteria. This new material could potentially be developed into an antimicrobial drug to help treat patients with antibiotic-resistant infections. The results of this research were published in 2018.
