Soldiers demolishing wire entanglements during World War One. The destruction of wire entanglements was essential for advancing troops. Even when breached by artillery, these entanglements were often still subject to enfilade or machine gun fire, so complete destruction was necessary. Similarly, demolished batteries and buildings, including villages and ports, needed to be leveled to prevent them from providing cover or support to the enemy. Oblique photographs were useful in confirming the extent of destruction.
