Ny-Alesund research station, on the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago governed by Norway. Ny-Alesund is one of the northernmost settlements in the world, and is inhabited by around 30 people working at the research stations or providing support. The settlement was founded in 1916 as a coal mining town, becoming a research base in 1968. As of 2010, ten countries maintain or work at research bases here.
