ANSER BERNICLA. The Bernicle Goose is a regular winter visitant in GreatBritain, arriving in the autumn on our north-western andwestern shores, and on the northern shores of Ireland, invery large flocks; it occasionally frequents also the easterncoast, but only under peculiar circumstances, and in smallnumbers. The geographical range of this species extends overEurope, Asia, and America. The chief numbers reside inLapland, Norway, Iceland, and Sweden, coming southwardto the coast of the Baltic; also Jutland, Holstein and Hol-land, and the northern coast of France. In Asia it rangesfrom the most northern shores as far as Japan. In Americait is very plentiful in the Hudsons Bay and Canada, butrare in the United States, which proves plainly that theBernicle Goose prefers the colder regions of the globe, although the severity of the Arctic zone forces it to pass
