The landing was during the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. The early 1900s caption reads: British Red Cross Nurses Landing at Athens. During the recent Turkish war there was through all Europe a strong undercurrent of sympathy for the Greeks. This was proven by such events as the one here shown. England sent out a numerous party of volunteer nurses to care for the wounded Greeks. They were received with extravagant welcome in Athens. Our picture is from an actual sketch taken at the time; the sweet faces of the nurses are real portraits, and so perhaps are those of the swarthy, shouting Athenians.
