In the early part of the yeartwo formidable ones broke out, one in Kwang-tung, which had gained great strength, therebels having been joined by the imperialtroops sent to quell them. Several interioreitiea had been taken and were held by therebels according to the latest accounts. Theother was in Sliansi, and was also of consider-able magnitude. Toward the close of the. BOCA TIGRIS, CHINA. year a rebellion in Cliihkiang was suppressedbefore it was fairly started. The headquartersof the conspirators was the city of Wenchow,while tbe whole southeastern portion of theprovince had been worked up by them. Arebellion in Chihli broke out in the spring inconsequence of a terrible famine, Famineswere also reported from other parts of theempire. One of the most terrible in its con-sequences was that in the northern of deaths from starvation occurreddaily. Rico had been ordered from the southand from Formosa, and the Peking authoritieshad given 100,000 taels and 1,000,000 cattiesof rice for the relief of the destitute. HamlinCollege contributed 1,000,000 piculs of rice,and Li-lIung-Chang, Viceroy of Chihli Prov-ince, also sent 1,000,000 piculs of rice. Thefirst rain in nine months fell on July 2d.
