Novoafonsky (or New Athos) Monastery near Sukhumi in Abkhazia


Novoafonsky (or New Athos) Monastery near Sukhumi in Abkhazia was built in the mount of Athos by Greeks. They fled to the Caucasus from the Ottoman Empire late in the 19th century. Rarely seen by the outside world, as Tourism in Abkhazia is illegal under Georgian law through an action of the Georgian government to ban foreigners from entering the occupied territory. The majority of the world's governments consider Abkhazia to be a part of Georgia's territory. Abkhazia considers itself an independent state, called the Republic of Abkhazia or Apsny.
