STEPHENSON, ARTHUR FREDERICK VERE : Lieutenant, 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders; son of Emeritus ProfessorWilliam Stephenson, ; ; bornAberdeen, 11 Novem-ber 1882 ; educatedAberdeen GrammarSchool; trained as anengineer with & Duncan,1901-05. During ses-sion 1902-03 he at-tended classes in theAgricultural Depart-ment. After gaining some experience at Peter-head and Leeds he returned to Aberdeen, andin 1909 attended University Classes in became Inst. in 1910, and in the. following year obtained an appointment in theFederated Malay States. At home Stephenson was an enthusiasticmember of the 1st Gordon Highlanders,and in the he joined the Malay StatesVolunteer Rifles, with whom he was mobilizedon the outbreak of war, serving for a time as aCorporal at Singapore. As early as possible heobtained leave and returned home where, inJune 1915, he obtained a Commission as Lieu-tenant, 4th Gordon Highlanders, proceeding toFrance in October 1915. On 23 July 1916 hewas reported missing after an attack at HighWood in the Battle of the Somme. Later itwas learned from a German Officer prisonerthat he died in a German trench, a fewhours after being badly wounded by a handgrenade.
