The central parts of this State, less elevated andundulating, are well watered, and in the river-bottoms theland is extremely rich and productive. The valley of theAlabama is one of the most fertile regions of the Union. Inthe south the climate is very warm, the soils rich, but withgreat exceptions, and the principal growths of a tropical char-acter. The sugar-cane has been found to succeed well in tlieextreme southern strip between Florida and Mississippi, andindigo was formerly raised in considerable quantities; rice,also, grows well in the alluvial bottoms near the Gulf; butcotton, which thrives throughout the State, is the greatagricultural staple.
