II5 Jost Hite built his first house near a spring, whose re-freshing waters continue to flow now as when he found itin the wilderness over 160 years ago. This house was ofstone, so constructed on the side of a gently-sloping hill,and partially built into it, that one could go directly intothe upper story from the high ground, and then, by goingdown stairs, come out of the lower story on the low grounda few feet from the spring. The lower story was, nodoubt, the general utility part, while the upper was usedfor living purposes. The walls were of stone and thick,but the roof had fallen in, and it was comparatively inruins when the author visited it in 1891. It was probablybuilt between 1732 and 1735.
