A Army Chinook Helicopter transports eight 1 ton bags of sand to the breech of the river Douglas near Croston in West Lancashire. Members of the public are watching operations from Town Meadow swing bridge over the Rufford branch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal with pilot avoiding the overhead power lines with the west Pennine hills beyond in the background. The river had broken its banks following heavy rain fall on Boxing day. The helicopter was used as the alternative of building a emergency access road was impractical due to the amount of water and the isolated area where the power of the water had breached the embankment. Meanwhile there are powerful pumps in use removing water from the flooded farmland.
