SEMAPHORE SWITCH SIGNALS ON THE TERRE HAUTE,INDIANAPOLIS & EASTERN AH of the turnout switches on the Indianapolis-Richmonddivision of the Terre Haute, Indianapolis & Eastern haverecently been equipped with supplementary semaphore armsoperated by a wire connection from the switch rod. Thesemaphores were put in because it was difficult to see theordinary switch targets or lamps at a safe distance, dueto the interference of the pole line. The track is laid. HOME-MADE SEMAPHORE SWITCH SIGNAL close to the highway with all poles, turnouts and switchstands on the inside, and it was not possible to change theirposition without encroaching on the highway. One of thesemaphores is shown in the accompanying illustration. The semaphores are home-made affairs and are mountedabout 15 ft. above the ground on a stub pole set close to theswitchstand. A pivot casting is attached to the back of thepole and a fixed lamp bracket is attached on the front spectacle frame to which the semaphore arm is at-tached is made of i-in. boards sheathed with thin sheetiron on the outside. It is made in two parts which straddlethe pole and enclose the lamp. The arm is made of a 8 in. wide and 3 ft. long, having a notched end andpainted red. The two halves of the spectacle frame areconnected at the back with a J2-in. rod which carries eightcircular cast-iron counterweight disks. These counter-weights are sufficient to cause the
