Gangotri Glacier The Gangotri glacier is situated in the Uttarkashi District of Garhwal Himalaya in the north west of India. The Gangotri glacier is the source of the river Ganges, or Ganga, and has been receding at an alarming rate Fears are that a dip in the holy River Ganges for future generation of Indians could easily become a thing of the past as this most pious of rivers could dry up. Gangotri Glacier at about 4225 meters and approximately 29 kilometres long, and two to six kilometres wide is said to be the longest glacier in the Central Himalayas. Immerging from the glacier at Gaumukh high in the Himalayas the river is known as the Bhagirathi River. The glacier is at the base of the mighty Bhagirathi Peaks that dominate the skyline in this region.
