The mountain massif Tabyn-Bogdo-Ola (Tavan-Bogdo-Ula, Tavan-Bogdo-Ola, Altai Tavan Bogd), translated as “Five holy peaks”, is situated in the south of Altai on the border of three countries: Russia, Mongolia, and China. The Tabyn-Bogdo-Ola is formed by the three ridges: the Sailugem, the Mongolian Altai and the South Altai Ridge. The highest peak of the Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains is Mt Huiten (4,374 m). It is also the highest peak of Moungolia and the second highest mountain of the Altai Mountain system. “Nairamdal” in the Mongolian language means “friendship”. The mountain got such a name after the ascent by a joint Russian-Mongolian team of alpinists. Its other name is Kiityn, or Kholodnaya (Cold). The mountain system Tabyn-Bogdo-Ola was studied by the Russian scholar Vasily Sapozhnikov in 1905. He made the first map of the massif and discovered many glaciers here, including the biggest glacier in Altai - the Potanin Glacier. The glacier descends from Mount Nairamdal towards the territory of Mongolia. Today it extends for km, and covers the area of sq km.
