It was foundedin the reign of king Stephen; when William de Huntingfieldgave the whole island of St. Mary, or Hurst island, in Mend-ham, to the monks of Castle Acre, Norfolk, on conditionthat they should erect on it a church of stone, and build aconvent adjoining, where they should place at least eight oftheir number, to be under the government of a prior, nomi-nated by the founder and his heirs, subject to the approvalof the prior of Acre.
