CHAPTEB I HER BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD Anne Seymour Conway was born at CoombBank, Sundridge, Kent, in 1748. She was theonly child of the Honble. Henry Seymour Con-way and his wife, Caroline, Countess of Bank belonged at this time to AnneConways grandfather, Colonel the Hon. JohnCampbell of Mamore, who succeeded his cousinas fourth Duke of Argyll in 1761, and whorebuilt the house, which, however, does notappear to have been a very convenient one, forMiss Mary Berry, when visiting it in later years,writes: I think it unites every possible dis-comfort. At the time of her visit it was theresidence of Miss Conways uncle, Lord FrederickCampbell, then married to the widow of theLord Ferrers who was hanged at Tyburn forthe murder of his steward. In later years thisunfortunate lady was burnt to death by fallinginto the fire at Coomb Bank. The Campbells had bought this estate from theA 1 ANNE SEYMOUR, DAMER Islay family only
