ELDRIDGE. Benjamin P. Eldridge, Superintendent of Police, of thecity of Boston, was born in the seashore town of Truro,Mass., in 1838. When he was four years old, his parentsmoved to Dorchester, then a suburban town bordering onBoston, He was educated in the Dorchester public schoolsand after graduation entered the office of the Dorchester FireInsurance Company, first as a clerk and subsequently under-taking the duties of a special policeman. Shortly after his entry into the field of service to whichhis life has since been devoted, he was elected a constableby the choice of the town and discharged all the duties ofthis post until his enlistment in the state police force ofMassachusetts in 1867. He served on this force till 1875,working in all parts of the Commonwealth, and at times inthe discharge of his duties in other states of the Union. Upon the abolition of the institution of the state policein 1875 he was appointed to the Boston police force andthree years laterourrivalrascalfa00eldr
