Transactions of the odontological society of Great Britain . ruction we areenabled to ensure more accurately fitting plates, and, in many instances, to effect a material reduc-tion in their size. These bands are of two varie-ties, the first being self-adjusting, and is designedon the principle of the spring rings frequentlyattached to watch chains, while the other is amodification of the ordinary brooch joint. The self-adjusting band is made by taking apiece of thin gold tube, about f of an inch long, the width exactly corresponding to No. 14 stan- 6 ON SOME MECHANICAL DEVICES dard iron wire gauge. One end of the tube ismade solid for about -^ of an inch by solderinginto it a piece of gold wire, while the inside ofthe opposite extremity is tapped with a screw foraV of an inch. A slot is sawn through the middleof the solid extremity parallel to its long axis, andcarried as far back as the hollow part, or tube, and rather farther on one side than the the slot a flat piece of gold is fitted, toform the tongue, or middle portion of a hinge,. Fig. with two self-adjusting bands. The dotted lines indicate theamount to which the bands can be opened. the width of the tube, but projecting slightlybeyond its anterior extremity; the opposite ex-tremity of the tongue reaching as far back as theshort side of the slot. A hole is next drilledthrough the solid part of the tube and the tongue,at right angles to the slot, and a pin is passedthrough them and ultimately riveted or band having been accurately fitted to the model. FOR THE HETENTION OF ARTIFICIAL DENTURES. 7 is soldered to the anterior extremity of the tongue, and when this is replaced in the slot and trans-fixed by the pin the whole forms a hinged piece of extended spiral spring is now thrustinto the open end of the tube until it pressesagainst the tongue, and is then held in position bya small gold plug screwed into the tube behind it.
