This mixture should notbe corked for some time after it is made. 702 DISEASES For a child this prescription should be reduced just one-half in eachpart, with the exception of the water. In some cases, particularly if the patient be a child, large doses ofthe citrate, or other salt, of potassium exert a depressing influence andhave to be decreased. Counterirritation may be applied to the chest in the shape of amustard- or spice-plaster. If the soreness of the bronchial tubes is notrelieved by this means, inhalations of steam arising from boiling watermay be practised, either through a cone, one end of which covers thetop of a pitcher and the other end of which covers the mouth and nose. Fig. 126.—Bronchitis-tent put up by aid of two sheets pinned together and fourbroomsticks lashed to corners of bed. The steam arises from an Arnold steam sterilizerto which has been attached a tube. When in operation the side flap of the tent isdropped. of the patient, or by covering the head and pitcher with a towel. Theusefulness of this method may be much increased by the addition of 1tablespoonf ul of compound tincture of benzoin to each pint of young children, particularly in the first stage of bronchitis and inthe later stages, the use of the so-called bronchitis-tent is of greatvalue. It consists of a canopy raised over the bed a sufficient distanceto allow of the circulation of plenty of air. Through one side of thiscanopy passes a tube leading from an Arnold steam sterilizer, underwhich is an alcohol lamp to keep the temperature of the water suf-ficiently high (Figs. 126 and 127). By this means the air breathed by BRONCHITIS
