THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF HAMILTON, O, 187 PAYNE CHAPEL. THIvS congregation is connected with the African Methodi-st EpiscopalChurch. It was organized in the year of 1840, in the of MatildaTaylor ])y Rev. Thomas Lawrence of Cincinnati. There were 19 membersenrolled at the time of the organization. Among those the names of Ander-son, Sampson. Jones and Yancy are prominent. Steps were at once takento secure a site and erect a church. The lot which is still was pur-chased, and a church 24^^x38 feet was erected which was dedicated in June1842. At the first communion administered by Rev. Henry Atkin!3on, therewere 24 communicants.
