Male genitals. Infrared image of the genitals of a 53-year-old man. Infrared lighting can be used to visualize subcutaneous structures (those below the surface of the skin) that are not visible or less visible in normal lighting. These structures include superficial veins. Several superficial veins are seen in the penis. Infrared imaging of these veins can be used for diagnostic purposes, and to aid location of veins for injections and treatments such as laser interstitial therapy.
