GHB molecule. Computer model of a molecule of the recreational drug gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB, ). The atoms (balls) are colour-coded: carbon (yellow), hydrogen (grey), and oxygen (red). It is more commonly found in the form of a chemical salt, combined with potassium (K-GHB) or sodium (Na-GHB). It is used as an intoxicant, like alcohol, but an overdose is easy and there are dangerous side-effects. These include dizziness, nausea, unconsciousness, convulsions, and death. Its sale and use is illegal in many countries. It is also used as a sleep-aid, in body-building, and it is also a natural component of human cells.
